K-12 Education and Research Specialist

The National Women's History Museum is excited to announce an opening for a K-12 Education and Research Specialist. This fully virtual/remote position offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of women’s history education by designing innovative programs and conducting impactful research. As a leader in women’s history education, we are seeking a passionate educator and researcher who can bring expertise in K-12 methodologies and a commitment to inclusive and accessible learning experiences. The successful applicant must have access to a reliable internet connection, and occasional travel to the Museum’s administrative offices in Washington, DC or other locations will be required. This role is ideal for a dynamic individual who thrives at the intersection of education, history, and digital innovation.


Starting Pay Range:
$76,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience

Position Summary:
The K-12 Education and Research Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the Museum’s educational mission by developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs and research designed for K-12 students and educators. This position requires a deep understanding of research best practices, a strong background in K-12 classroom teaching and/or museum education, and specialized expertise in K-12 teaching and/or museum education methodologies. The specialist will lead research initiatives that contribute to the fields of museum and women’s history education and that enhance and support the Museum’s educational offerings, ensuring that content aligns with current women’s history research and reflects the latest in pedagogical practices. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Strategic Programs and Education, the K-12 Specialist also undertakes departmental administrative duties as needed and is committed to creating inclusive and accessible learning experiences for all.
Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement educational programs and resources that align with the C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards and the Museum’s mission, with particular attention to historically marginalized voices and underrepresented perspectives.
  2. Conduct thorough research in K-12 education methodologies and historiography to inform current research agendas, enhance program content, and ensure academic rigor and accuracy. Though not required, the Specialist will also lead the publishing of said research when opportunity arises.
  3. Collaborate with historians, educators, and curriculum developers to create content that is both historically sound and pedagogically effective for K-12 audiences.
  4. Develop and deliver professional development opportunities for educators, including workshops, webinars, and resource guides tailored to various educational settings.
  5. Contribute to evaluation efforts to assess program effectiveness, using data to refine and improve educational initiatives.
  6. Serve as a subject matter expert on K-12 education trends, research practices, and best practices in teaching history.
  7. Advocate for inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices within the Museum’s educational initiatives.
  8. Represent the Museum at educational and/or museum conferences and workshops, fostering relationships with industry peers, educators, and educational organizations.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, history, museum studies, or a related field, with a focus on K-12 education and/or programming.
  • At least 5 years of experience in K-12 teaching, curriculum development, or museum education, with demonstrated expertise in pedagogical methodologies.
  • Proven experience conducting academic research in education, including familiarity with historiography, curriculum theory, and research methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of current trends and challenges in K-12 education, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex historical research into engaging educational content.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with digital learning platforms and technology integration in educational settings is a plus.
