About Dr. Mary Edwards Walker
As a surgeon, women’s rights advocate, abolitionist, and spy, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker became the first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War. She was a staunch advocate for women's suffrage and dress reform, and is the only woman in U.S. History to have received the Medal of Honor.

We're honored to be in Oswego to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker and to commemorate the release of the 2024 Dr. Mary Edwards Walker quarter, the thirteenth coin to be released in the U.S. Mint's American Women Quarters™ Program. Today's celebration will include a panel discussion, remarks from special guests, and a performance by Kathie Barnes.
