Marty Maskall
For the past sixteen years, 1920 Society member Marty Maskall has generously supported the National Women’s History Museum’s mission of ensuring women’s stories become an integral part of our national narrative. Holding a B.A. from Stanford University and M.A. from Duke University, Marty is an accomplished web designer, editor, and publisher whose work includes The Athena Treasury: 101 Inspiring Quotations by Women.
Beyond Marty’s interest in ensuring women’s voices are documented and shared, her passion for rethinking the way people live to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to today’s environmental and social issues has transpired into a collaborative multi-generational neighborhood. In 2005, Marty began her journey of developing Fair Oaks EcoHousing, a cohousing community 18 miles east of Sacramento, CA. The goal was to bring people together to live in an inclusive, earth-friendly environment fostering supportive relationships among neighbors, based on respect, cooperation, and fun. After many years of hard work and perseverance, Marty’s vision was realized in June 2020 when she and her partner, Subhash Chand, moved into their new home along with 29 other families.
What initially inspired you to support the National Women’s History Museum, and what recently moved you to become a member of the 1920 Society?
I believe that everyone needs models to encourage their success. I originally wanted to be a doctor, but I chickened out because I didn’t see enough successful models. I love NWHM because it showcases successful women. My parents died and left me some money, and I wanted to use some of that inheritance to encourage other women. My mother would definitely have wanted me to do that!
What types of programs, events, or exhibitions would you like the National Women’s History Museum to hold in the coming years?
I think you’ve been doing a great job. I don’t have any specific requests. A variety is good.
If you were to choose one quote from The Athena Treasury: 101 Inspiring Quotations by Women that embody your life’s vision, which would it be?
Eleanor Roosevelt said: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I believe it’s important to have dreams – without them we won’t take action.
What inspired you to spearhead the development of Fair Oaks EcoHousing?
I visited a friend in downtown Sacramento who lives in a cohousing community. I fell in love with the concept. The world needs more cohousing communities, and I decided to do my part by creating Fair Oaks EcoHousing.
What has been your most life enriching experience since living in Fair Oaks EcoHousing?
Watching the joy the little kids experience in our safe community. Every kid should have an opportunity to grow up in a safe, loving neighborhood.
